Romantasy is one of my favourite genres to read. Who can resist a world filled with whimsical creatures, magical landscapes, and swoon-worthy couples? Despite its charm, the genre carries predictable tropes that are undeniably enjoyable. So, grab your favorite cosy blanket and a cup of tea, as I guide you through ten tropes in romantasy that I can't help but love.
1. The Brooding Hero
You know the type: tall, dark, and shrouded in mystery. This hero often has a heart full of angst and a tragic backstory. It's a common theme, like Max from "Daughter of No Worlds," who is a grumpy, retired military commander, their emotional journey touches the heart and keeps readers engaged, particularly when their emotional walls come crashing down.
2. The Feisty Female Protagonist
In contrast to the brooding hero, we meet the strong female lead. She’s not afraid to assert herself, confront challenges, and even kick some serious butt. Characters like Aelin from the "Throne of Glass" series embody this trope perfectly, defying societal norms while on a quest for self-discovery, adventure, or romance. Her strength and resilience evolve beautifully as the narrative unfolds, showcasing the depth of her character.
3. Star-Crossed Lovers
The timeless trope of lovers kept apart by unfortunate circumstances! Think of "When the Moon Hatched." Whether it's a forbidden romance between a witch and a knight or humans and fae, these relationships create immense drama. Their journey to overcome obstacles, like family feuds or magical barriers, pulls readers in. It's thrilling to see them fight for their love against all odds, and it often leaves us eagerly turning the pages.

4. Magical Creatures as Sidekicks
Who can resist a talking cat, a witty sprite, or a lovably awkward dragon? These magical companions often accompany the hero on their journey, providing comic relief and insightful wisdom. Characters like Bellarand the grumpy unicorn from "Sweetling" remind protagonists—and readers—of what’s truly important (and despite what Bellarand thinks, it's not the squirrels!) They add depth to the adventure while making it feel more enchanting.
5. The Chosen One
Every story needs a hero, often embodied by the "Chosen One." This character discovers unique powers or a significant destiny that sets them apart. While it may seem a little overused, the classic journey of "just an ordinary person who becomes extraordinary," as seen in "The Hunger Games," is hard to resist.
6. The Love Triangle
Love triangles may be a cliché, but they inject an irresistible layer of tension into any romantasy book. Who will the protagonist choose? The dependable friend or the mysterious newcomer? This trope evokes a rollercoaster of emotions—jealousy, confusion, and satisfaction when the right choice is finally made. It keeps readers guessing and emotionally invested, which is why I can’t resist it every time.

7. Hidden Identities
Nothing adds excitement like a character with a secret! Hidden identities introduce thrilling plots where characters are not who they initially seem. Like Poppy from "From Blood and Ash," who becomes entangled in a world of deception and unexpected romance while accompanied by someone who is not all that they seem. These plot twists and dramatic reveals keep readers on their toes, eager to uncover what lies beneath.
8. The Mentor Figure
Every hero needs guidance, and that's where the wise mentor comes in. This character usually has a wealth of knowledge and experience, often acting as a guide for our protagonists. The bond between the mentor and the hero can be incredibly touching, as seen in "Harry Potter" with Dumbledore. The mentor's wisdom shapes the hero's path, providing emotional depth and richness to the story.
9. The Epic Quest
What’s a romantasy story without a thrilling quest? Whether it’s searching for a magical artifact or embarking on a journey to save a loved one, these adventures are crucial to keep the plot moving. The trials faced along the way serve to strengthen relationships and lead to unforgettable moments of growth and love. Like in "The Lord of the Rings," the journey itself often becomes as important as the destination.
10. Happily Ever After
Let’s face it: we read romantasy partly for the promise of a happily ever after. After navigating trials, heartbreak, and challenges, seeing characters find love and happiness is immensely satisfying. This trope provides closure and leaves readers with that warm, fuzzy feeling, reminiscent of reuniting with dear friends after a long journey. There's nothing quite like closing the book with a smile.
